Sorties SE901: HAST (F-4D / AQM-81A)

The origins of the U.S. HAST Program date back to Project Sandpiper - a 1960s U.S. Air Force effort to improve high-altitude target drone performance by using with hybrid rocket propulsion in place of dangerous, liquid fueled systems. The first phase of Sandpiper modified existing AQM-37 Jayhawks with a new hybrid motor. The hybrid system used a solid fuel grain and a storable nitric-acid oxidizer called IRFNA — inhibited red fuming nitric acid. The goal was to keep the advantages of a compact, air-launched, high-speed target while exploring a propulsion system that offered improved handling, performance, and control. The trials were promising and lead to the HAST program. HAST ultimately led to the Teledyne Ryan Model 305 / XAQM-81A Firebolt, which looked similar to the Jayhawk but used the new hybrid propulsion approach. The Firebolt was designed to fly faster, higher, and farther than the earlier target drones. Despite successful testing, it never entered production, and only a small number (some sources say 9-12) of test vehicles were built.

SPECIFICATIONS

SE901 is a Sortie (dual relic) mission card that features 2 aircraft: An F-4D S/N: 65-0671 (fuselage skin) and an AQM-81A Firebolt (fuselage fairing skin).

Sheet 1 (TOPAS): TOPAS (The Original Production Archive Sheet) Air Drops are Sheet 1 (the first made) cards sealed in a magnetic case with a metallic security sticker. That sticker carries a serial number tied to the card's sheet number, cataloged here by us before it ships, so every TOPAS is recorded in our registry the moment it leaves the shop. The serial and aircraft info is printed on top of the case, too, for easy ID when stored vertically.

Each one ships in a custom box featuring the card art, a serialized TOPAS COA, a sticker, and an NFC tag that contains a digital download tied to that specific card, tucked inside the case.

Due to availability, SE901 is only offered in TOPAS. The main image shows SE901 removed from its case for product photos.

All TOPAS Air Drops will ship the week of the 20th.
