Legends AD712: F-4C Phantom II

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was a fighter/interceptor originally developed in the late 1950s for the United States Navy. First flying in 1958 and entering service in 1960, the F-4 quickly proved to be one of the most versatile combat aircraft of the Cold War, serving with the Navy, United States Marine Corps, and United States Air Force. It became the primary U.S. fighter during the Vietnam War, where it performed air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions, achieving numerous aerial victories. Known for its speed and heavy payload capacity, the Phantom set multiple aviation records and was exported widely to allied nations. Although gradually replaced by newer fighters beginning in the late 1970s, the F-4 remained in U.S. service into the 1990s.

SPECIFICATIONS

AD712 has been cut from a the fuselage of F-4C S/N: 63-7418. 63-7418 was an early-production U.S. Air Force Phantom, built by McDonnell in St. Louis and entering Air Force service in January 1964. Assigned to the 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing, 63-7418 was used as a “lead-the-force” aircraft on an accelerated flying schedule intended to accumulate experience and expose maintenance and systems issues more quickly than normal operations. It became the first USAF F-4 to reach both 1,000 and 2,000 flight hours, making it an important aircraft in the early maturation of the Phantom fleet. It later served with the 58th Tactical Fighter Training Wing and continued its career with the Michigan, Indiana, and California Air National Guard, including service with the 171st FIS, 113th TFS, and 196th TFS.
