The F-14D Super Tomcat was the final and most advanced variant of F-14, combining the Tomcat airframe with powerful General Electric F110 engines, the AN/APG-71 radar, modernized avionics, and expanded strike and reconnaissance capabilities. While 37 F-14Ds were built new, an additional 18 earlier F-14As were completely remanufactured to F-14D standards and designated F-14D(R). The Super Tomcat entered service in the early 1990s and evolved from Cold War fleet-defense interceptors into multirole aircraft, flying combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan before the Tomcat’s retirement in 2006. BuNo 159595 began life as an F-14A before being remanufactured as F-14D(R) DR-12. It joined the VF-2 “Bounty Hunters” in 1997 as NE-112, later becoming NE-107. 159595 flew the very last VF-2 Tomcat flight ever on June 18th, 2003.
