Assigned to the 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing, 63-7418 was used as a “lead-the-force” aircraft on an accelerated flying schedule intended to accumulate experience and expose maintenance and systems issues more quickly than normal operations. It became the first USAF F-4 to reach both 1,000 and 2,000 flight hours, making it an important aircraft in the early maturation of the Phantom fleet.
